You'll find the Umngazi experience makes you feel more alive and this in turn will make you feel more hungry! Kick off the day with a healthy river breakfast as you casually plan out another fun-filled day of Wild Coast sights and sounds. Later, sample our dinner menu, which offers a variety of meat dishes, fish so fresh it melts in your mouth and delicious salads and veggies.

If you're looking for an old favourite that might not feature on the current menu, feel free to make requests. Like everything else, our menu's flexible and our chefs are always happy to try and meet your needs.

Guests can look forward to 3 delectable meals per day, beautifully laid out by our local chefs in Umngazi's relaxed, informal dining room.

If al fresco is what you'd prefer and the weather's suitable, our delightful food can be enjoyed under the large shady tree on the rustic Dining Room Deck, which overlooks the swimming pool and serene river views beyond.

At Umngazi we go out of our way to ensure that guests enjoy a quality dining experience, with or without the kids.

To facilitate this, a Kids' Dining Room is situated adjacent to the main dining room. This bright and airy facility is equipped with high chairs, a communal dining table, separate fridge and a microwave - all of which creates a cozy and inter-active environment in which kids can enjoy a meal under your supervision or the watchful care of a staff member.

Basil's (named after Umngazi's original owner) welcoming lay out and prime position over the riverfront create a central buzz point for the resort. Whether you prefer sitting outdoors, sipping on a glass of wine or sharing stories with other guests across the bar counter, one thing is for sure…Basil's brings people together. Over the years, revisiting guests have bonded here, discussing common interests and taking part in some of Umngazi's organised social events.

The ladies running the bar are real personalities and a real hit amongst regular Umngazi guests. They're known for their phenomenal sense of humour and superb, friendly service.

Quench your thirst with one of Umngazi's quirky ‘homemade' cocktails or an ice-cold beer on the outside deck, and you'll really appreciate the allure of Basil's Bar. In fact you may not leave.

Wine at Umngazi

Our intention is to offer you a balance and range of grape varieties, from a spread of regions which produce our South African wines. Value for money is one of our key selection criteria, whilst at the same time endeavouring to bring you some of the wines of true international stature. We are confident that you will find a wine of your choice to compliment your meal.

If you're celebrating a special occasion with a loved one or a small group of friends, then indulge yourself at the Green Door Wine Cellar, which offers a leisurely tasting and special dining experience…where the only person allowed to intrude is your waiter. Some of the wines here have been around longer than the Internet. Much longer.

You may prefer dining outdoors at the Riverside Gazebo. This exclusive experience is set on stilts raised above the river and offers one of the more captivating views at Umngazi. Connected to the mainland by a wooden jetty and illuminated at night by lanterns, guests are treated to intimate privacy under a cozy thatched roof.

A very popular activity, particularly with our honeymooners and couples. In the late afternoon, just before dusk, your guide will take you on a gentle sojourn up the Umngazi River, which meanders through the valley between the rolling green hillsides. Accompanied by an array of succulent snacks and a selection of chilled beverages, guests can completely unwind to the sound of lapping water and the call of the resident African Fish Eagle.

Bid farewell to a day filled with activity, with nothing but the prolific scenery of the Wild Coast, the calming sounds of the nature that surrounds and, of course, a cocktail in hand. Our menu boasts an array of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails, each offering flavours that are not simply appealing, but memorable.

For the kids, or the parents who love to be them, there is an endless menu of milkshakes that present one of the biggest challenges here at Umngazi: Choosing one!

River Breakfast

Umngazi looks to provide "creative dining with a difference", and uses original ideas to explore the natural beauty of the surrounding environment. Our river breakfast is just one of the many alternative gastronomic experiences offered at Umngazi.

A short ferry cruise or paddle up the river in the still, early morning will take you to a secluded destination where your buffet breakfast is set out amid the morning sights and sounds of the vibrant indigenous coastal bush.

Saturday Night Seafood Evenings have become the stuff of legends amongst Umngazi visitors. This is an opportunity for the Umngazi staff to showcase their vibrant culture while guests enjoy their lovingly prepared cuisine.

A succulent combination of fish, shellfish, and home baked breads, juicy salads and hearty soups are prepared to perfection.
As the evening progresses, the Umngazi staff emerge, in traditional dress, performing Pondo songs and dances to the delight of the guests.

You're welcome to join in the festivities, discover your groove with rhythmic clapping or taking part in the singing and dancing. You don't have to be John Travolta; just join in the festivities.

A South African staple with a difference, the traditional braai is the order of the day for a lazy Sunday afternoon on the dining room deck. This is weather dependant.

Discover one of the best, packed lunches you'll ever taste. These much appreciated ‘take aways' are always enjoyed by eager fishermen and intrepid explorers keen to spend the day out and about, wandering the surrounding hills, valleys and beaches.
